Mentorship-Immediate Past Presidents

At this point in the year, hopefully you have been able to transition from being the “one in charge” to someone who supports and advises. It is a difficult transition but one that provides you an opportunity to continue to contribute but with decreased accountability.

If you are looking for a way to contribute to the members and the executive team I recommend you play a role in supporting the mentoring programme in the club. Mentorship is a key pillar of the Toastmasters experience and is often overlooked by overworked executive team members. This may be the best way for you to contribute and especially at this point where members are making plans for the year.

If your club already has an effective mentoring programme then perhaps you can run a few workshops with the mentors to guide them further on their role and how best to support members. The Pathways Level 2 project “Introduction to Toastmasters Mentoring” provides a great resource for this, especially on the difference between the mentor’s role and that of a coach.

If your club does not have a mentoring programme working (or at least could be more effective) I suggest you work with the Vice President Education and Vice President Membership to set this up – and consider playing a key role in making this effective (and thus alleviate these team members from additional responsibility).

You did an amazing job as Club President. We’re rooting for you to thrive in your role as IPP. Let’s Make History.
