Who is knocking at the door!

I joined Toastmasters to improve on my communication skills, but then I heard a knock at the door!

My fellow Toastie asked me if I would be interested in becoming Sergeant at Arms, as I showed potential in organising and time management. Who? Me!

So, with a little nudge, I agreed to take on the role that allowed me to practice my organising and time management skills. Not too long thereafter, I took on the roles of VPEd and then Club President, because someone saw some leadership potential in me and encouraged me to practice these skills. I have realised that Toastmasters creates opportunities for individuals in both communication and leadership abilities, by encouraging practical application within a supportive, encouraging environment.

Challenges were many, including communicating my expectations on a task clearly, to avoid misunderstanding amongst role players. I tried to speak less and listen more, to ensure team members were able to express their views fairly. I learnt to trust more as I encouraged team members to take responsibility for tasks, without me interfering and wanting to do everything (as I was advised by a mentor not to micro-manage everything). I consciously had to remind myself that I am here to learn and not to be scared to make mistakes and to embrace feedback as an opportunity to grow.

I feel that I have so much more to learn, but I know I am not alone. I always have someone guiding me and helping me navigate through the challenges of becoming a better leader. Today, I am proud to have been given the opportunity to be Division E Director 2018/2019, only because YOU (My Toastmaster family) saw something in me!

I opened the door to a world of endless possibilities, by taking up the leadership opportunities made available to me through the Toastmasters International program.
