Mentor/Mentee – Nerisa Shiri and Nwabisa Maseti

When I joined the Breakfast Club Toastmasters in Cape Town, South Africa in January 2020, I was so excited because I knew exactly why I had joined Toastmasters, but I soon realized that I was ignorance on fire when I attempted to prepare for speeches. I then was told I could get a mentor to hold my hand. The mentor happened to be Nwabisa Maseti. Our mentor- mentee relationship kickstarted by having a planning session to  clarify expectations. Nwabisa is someone who sees talent and ability in me, something that I couldn’t see myself and she helps bring it out of me.  She is my brain to pick, an ear to listen and a push in the right direction. We laugh, tease each other and get serious when it’s called for. All this is done with mutual respect of boundaries. I have gained more than I bargained for when I signed up for Toastmasters, through my mentor. She has helped me learn from her own experiences and avoid so many mistakes. I am thriving by standing on the shoulders of a giant.
