Toastmasters in Africa commemorate Africa Day with inaugural Pan-African Speak Up event
I am not African because I was born in Africa but because Africa was born in me. Kwame Nkrumah
More than 490 participants from about 68 countries collaborated to commemorate Africa Day with an inaugural Pan-African Speak Up virtual event held last Saturday 23 May 2020. Themed Building a better Africa and a better World, the occasion was aimed at uniting Toastmasters across borders within the African continent by promoting fellowship and the Toastmasters spirit.”
District Director, Nikki Quinn DTM, says that the online event was an exceptionally motivating and inspiring occasion created by and for the members of Toastmasters. “Our continent is in dire need of strong leaders in business, government and our communities. Toastmasters is where leaders are made. Now, more than ever, it is important for us to collaborate with our colleagues across the continent because we are all in need of personal development, motivation, and inspiration.”
Amongst the 11 countries who participated as role-players and speakers were Toastmasters from South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, Egypt, and Morocco.
Our special guest for the evening was International President-Elect Richard Peck, DTM who said, “Being a Leader isn’t about being the center of attention; it is about being the epicenter of action.” Also present in support of the virtual event were Region 11 Advisors Sandra Cooper, DTM and Ali Shahbaz Ali, DTM as well as District and Division Directors.
This is the right time to unleash the true leader in us and make the world a better place. Saturday’s showcase of the Toastmasters spirit made true this sentiment.
Happy Africa Day 2020, fellow Toastmasters!
