Wednesday, 20 January 2021 saw the birth of KWASAA Toastmasters Club with Lennox Ndiviwe Mlambisa as President. The online club, which is an incubator for clubs in smaller towns, was initially conceived in 2018 but officially registered with Toastmasters International on 13 January 2021 and has a whooping membership of 25, five of them dual members. A trilingual club that allows one to deliver speeches in ISIXHOSA, AFRIKAANS and ENGLISH, this club enables members to perfect speaking in their mother tongue, then progress to other languages. We have members from Butterworth, Mthatha and Uitenhage, all small towns with no clubs yet. Upon gathering a decent number of members in any of these small towns, those members will be supported to start a Club of their own.
Dr Benjamin Wayo, a finalist at the World Championship of Public Speaking, was the Guest Speaker and had the audience hanging on every word of his presentation! The District 74 community was there to support, including District Director Merryl Jubber and past District Director Nikki Quinn. Club Member Thembile Vacu rendered an IsiXhosa poem to mark the occasion.
Imagine fighting a demon in the ‘language of the Queen’! Public Speaking is a DEMON to many, and one might be disadvantaged even more when trying to fight it in English – so this was one of the factors that inspired the club, which is a dream come true for the late Division Director Fatima Abrahams (who was replaced by Belita, Algoa Club Past President), Division Directors Mimi Makupula DTM and Mel Awu and Past Division Director Angie Kivido. KWASAA means “The Dawn” in IsiXhosa and the club brings the dawn of great moments through spoken word and leadership. Members are all excited about the journey ahead.
